BPA-free Plastic Bowl

The main bowl of this food mill is plastic. To be upfront with you, I generally prefer stainless steel kitchen products. They are what we use in commercial kitchens and IĀ think they hold up better in the long run. But, stainless is also more expensive usually.

There are some advantages, though, to having a plastic food mill. First, they are lighter weight. This is especially good for seniors or people with arthritis. Also, the discs are easier to change because they simply pop in and out of the plastic lip.

Of course, BPA in plastics has become a hot topic in the food industry. There are debates about whether or not it is dangerous. I’m not going to stick my toe into that argument here. But, if you are concerned about BPA, then know that this food mill is BPA-free.

Notched Feet

This food mill is one of the more stable ones I’ve looked at too. This is because of the notched feet on the bottom of the mill. These notches help the food mill stay on the bowl by better by providing ridges that sit right on the bowl edge.

Here’s a photo showing this:

3 InterchangeableĀ Discs

Like most other food mills, this one comes with 3 different sizedĀ screens: fine, medium, and coarse. Those sizes refer to the sizes of the holes the food is pressed through. So, fine is used for smooth purees like baby food or tomato sauce. Medium is often the choice for applesauce or more textured pureed soups. Finally, the coarse disc is used for chunkier purees and sauces.

*Note: I have tried to find out the exact sizes of the discs but my email to Alisa Home has noot been answered. I’ll update this post once I find that out.

Here’s a quick little video showing how this works:

Note that the discs are stainless steel, as are the “grinding” parts. Just didn’t want any confusion with the plastic discussion above.

Dishwasher Safe

The Alisa Home mill comes apart easily as well which really helps with cleaning. That way, all the little food bits are completely removed.

Alisa Home has another quick video showing this too:

The manufacturer suggests using the top rack of the dishwasher for cleaning. I’m going to add my additional thoughts here. I do not put the grinding discs in my dishwasher at home. I think they stay sharper longer if not exposed to the high heat of a dishwasher.

User Impressions

Generally, reviews about this food mill are excellent. It is consistently complimented on its durability, ease of use, looks, and cleanability.Ā  And I agree. It does excel in each of these areas.

There have been a very small percentage of people who had issues with it. Some have complained that some berry seeds made it through to the final puree. There are a number of reasons for this. It could have been the wrong disc size. But, this complaint is infrequent enough to not be very concerning.

A few others have said it felt light and flimsy. My guess is that some of these people were used to the heavy stainless steel mills. Yes, this one is lighter and probably can’t be pushed as hard.

Summary and Conclusion

So, what do I think about the Alisa Home Foley Food Mill? It is a quality-built, easy to use food mill that is easy to clean too!

I do recommend it for the home cook that wants a lightweight food mill that is easier to handle and use.Ā  This is the lightest of the food mills I have reviewed.

The only potential negatives are based on my personal preferences. Like I said before, I prefer stainless steel bowls on my food mill. But, again, that is just my preference. You can learn more about this one at Amazon below.
